When we were in South Africa in December, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) was issuing warnings that their stocks of blood were dangerously low. It was scary then but its scarier now as they currently only have 50% of the necessary reserves to cope with demand in the country.
This means that they only have 2.5 days of their normal 5 day reserve.
The SANBS recently launched this ad by Black River FC as part of their #DOnation of Heroes campaign to encourage South Africans to donate blood. I like the sound of it as it plays on South African’s sense of national pride and mobilisation, making it the DO nation. South Africa is also a nation of heroes.
Blood is the one resource that cannot be synthesised or recreated in a laboratory. There is currently no real substitute for human blood and hospitals around the world depend on blood donations. No matter where you are in the world, it is a real service to donate blood if you can so I’d really recommend it.
After all, what wouldn’t you do for a biscuit and a cup of tea?
Find out how you can give blood at sanbs.org.za. You can also follow the SANBS on Twitter @theSANBS or Facebook. Even if you’re not in South Africa, do share this campaign and news to encourage others to give blood.
